Who Are You Again? – Scott Thomas

Wayne Grudem, Mark Driscoll, & Scott Thomas

Wayne Grudem, Mark Driscoll, & Scott Thomas

We were able to enjoy quite a few of the restaurants and bars in Raleigh.  The nightlife dowtown is incredible and it really helped me get a picture of what Macon could become.  Our last night there proved rather enjoyable.  We went out to a bar with Keith & Amy and a couple of guys from the Acts 29 Network; one was a guy named Scott and one was Tyler.  I knew Tyler was the guy who arranged all of the church planter assessments, but I had never really spoken to him.

As we got settled in, Scott ended up across the table from me and Tyler was down at the other end talking to Keith.  Scott and I started talking about the beers on the menu and the conversation meandered through home prices in the northwest, our kids, and the things we enjoyed most about the conference – one of those being an incredible moment with Wayne Grudem.

Scott was just a normal guy, probably in his mid-40′s, wore a motorcycle jacket and boots and has a wife and a couple of sons.  As we talked about Grudem, the conversation moved to J.I. Packer and then Scott brought out his phone.  He started showing us pictures with Packer and Sproul and Driscoll and other big names and shared stories about each picture – some remarking that he probably shouldn’t tell us this, but…  I eventually asked him, “Who are you again?”  I’m Scott Thomas.  I’m the Director of the Acts 29 Network.

I’m not a fanboy.  I don’t get giddy when Driscoll or Piper walk by me and I don’t have any autographed books or pictures.  I highly respect them as men who are trying to be faithful to the high call that the Lord has laid on their lives.  I didn’t even know who Scott Thomas was until I set across the table from him.  But in that short conversation I gained a new appreciation for men that the Lord has raised up to lead the church.  Scott is one of those men.  I really appreciated his humble, nonchalant attitude.  He was a real guy handling the position the Lord has raised him up to in a very respectable manner. I may never speak to Scott Thomas again, but the ‘chance’ meeting with this man has encouraged me in my own journey.

I would encourage you to be praying for this man as he leads one of the fastest growing, theologically sound church planting movements that we have seen in a long time.  Thank God for faithful men.
